Unmissable Nights Out at The Fringe

—the revered Illinois indie-rock band widely considered by many as a pillar of second wave emo, along with similarly influential acts like the The Get Up Kids, the Promise Ring and Jimmy Eat World. But Braid were different; their albums were less overtly poppy and more urgent and frantic than their contemporaries, built on the off-kilter interplay between co-frontmen Bob Nanna and Chris Broach. It was this ever-present tension that drove the band apart barely a year after their genre-defining album Frame &amp; Canvas, with Braid coming to an end in August 1999, right on the cusp of emo breaking through to the mainstream. But with time comes perspective, and a reunion tour in 2004. Then in 2010, the band rediscovered not only their passion for their old music, but their desire to create new music. 2011’s Closer To Closed EP followed, and then came 2014’s No Coast LP, their first full-length in 16 years and an essential addition to their already-impressive catalog. A large part of what makes Braid a staple in the emo/indie “post” scene are the dual vocals and the melodic yet dissonant guitars (and vocals) of Chris Broach and Bob Nanna. Keeping time and adding to the musical interplay are Todd Bell (bass) and Damon Atkinson (drums) whose combined skill level remains the envy of many musicians worldwide.&nbsp;

MX Lonely formed in 2022 out of the ashes of other projects. Rae Haas (lead vocals/synth), Jake Harms (vocals/guitar) and Gabriel Garman (bassist and producer/engineer) sought to create a heavier, more aggressive version of a home recording project Haas x Harms had begun a few years before. Their music internalizes the ethereality of shoegaze and a love for the icy aggression of post punk and noiserock, while retaining traditional songwriting sensibilities (Elliott Smith being a formative influence). Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, MX has been touring nationally since early 2024, with supporting slots for Trauma Ray, Midrift, The Dirty Nil, Cryogeyser and The Used, among others.

The Franco-Moroccan artist Sophia Djebel Rose distills a singular music that is a rare treat to experience. Blending folk, noise, experimental song, and avant-garde poetry, she invents a new language of her own.&nbsp;Born into the perpetual exile of a childhood divided between two countries, Sophia has turned wandering into her greatest strength. As a modern poetess, she now takes the stage alone, armed with an electric guitar and an harmonium, to sing of the beauty of the lands she has ceaselessly left behind. Her live performances intertwine Mediterranean music with ecological and feminist themes, all of it carried by a syncretic approach that merges into a mysticism meant as an invitation to break the course of things and to reclaim one’s strength.
