Whacking: Attitude, Arms &amp; Self-Expression — Let’s Get to Whaak. Strike a pose. Feel the music. Bring the attitude. Join us for a Whacking Summer Session with Dorine — an empowering, high energy workshop rooted in self-expression, musicality, and community. Class ? Ready to try something bold, joyful, and full of personality? Whacking (also spelled waacking) is a style known for its stylised arm movements, posing, and strong performance energy — and it’s all about expression, confidence, and showing up as you are. In this workshop, Dorine will guide you through the key elements of the style: arms, lines, rhythm, musicality, and attitude — with options and adaptations so you can learn at your own pace. This is a space to explore, sweat, laugh, and build confidence. Whether you’ve never heard of Whacking before or you already love the style, you’ll be supported to grow your skills and your presence. Teacher? Dorine is an international performer, instructor, choreographer, and retreat leader with Tanzanian roots, born and raised in France and currently based in the UK. She is inspired by an array of cultures, has travelled extensively, and speaks four languages — all of which inform her work and teaching. Dorine has performed and competed internationally, including with London-based The Archetype (World of Dance UK Winners 2017), and she competes solo in battles around the world. Her achievements include Winner Waack the World Thessaloniki (2022), Winner Disconnection Jam London (2021), and performances at International Breakin’ Convention (2023). She is also the visionary behind Body Movement, a platform dedicated to sharing the transformative power of movement for physical and mental wellbeing — feelings first. About the style Whacking was created in the LGBT+ communities and ballroom scenes of 1970s Los Angeles. The style is rooted in freedom of expression, community, and performance — using sharp arm patterns, posing, and musicality to “hit” the music with confidence and force. It’s a dance form that celebrates identity, attitude, and presence. Who’s it for? Open to all levels — whether you’re completely new to Whacking culture or an experienced dancer wanting to deepen musicality, performance, and style. Born of the voices of past lives and baptized in the dust bowl dirt, the Gothic&nbsp; Americana music of the Heathen Apostles harkens back to a bygone chapter of&nbsp; American history. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus, Nick Cave &amp; the&nbsp; Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf, Loretta Lynn (the band&nbsp; covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith, the Heathen Apostles have created&nbsp; a style of music that will conjure both angels and demons, and will enlighten a&nbsp; darkened soul.&nbsp;&nbsp;	Forming the band together in 2013, Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll&nbsp; veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps, Mau Maus, Nick Curran &amp; the Lowlifes)&nbsp; quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry, Americana, and&nbsp; memento mori. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro&nbsp; on violin.&nbsp;&nbsp;	Their 6 critically acclaimed albums, along with their many EPs and singles (their&nbsp; release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine), capture&nbsp; the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana&nbsp; imagery surrounded by haunting, minor-chord melodies, musical influences&nbsp; including Gothic Roots music, Bluegrass, Blues, and Gypsy Jazz, all deftly bound&nbsp; together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age.&nbsp;&nbsp;	Most recently, the band completed tours of both mainland Europe as well as the&nbsp; UK in support of their latest release, The In Between, with plans to return for two&nbsp; tours in 2026 in support of their forthcoming EP.

Martha Hill is a Newcastle-based singer-songwriter rooted in the kind of DIY spirit that’s shaped by years of busking and intimate live shows. Known for her raw alt/indie-pop sound and sharp northern storytelling, her more recent music leans into the loose emotional intimacy of indie folk, drawing from the cracked-open vulnerability of Hayley Heynderickx, Big Thief’s organic conversational poetry, and the atmospheric textures of Bon Iver. The result is a quieter, more elemental sound. Since her first release in 2018, Martha Hill, supported by BBC6music, BBC1, and Spotify, has become a regular presence on the UK independent scene. Her debut album Football Heid, released last year, led to a live session on Cerys Matthews’ Sunday morning show on 6Music and sold-out shows across the UK. Entirely DIY in her approach, Hill continues to carve her own path, pushing back against industry expectations with honesty, independence, and an unmistakably human sound. Rather than bringing a full band, Martha Hill will be touring alongside collaborator and guitarist Jordie Cooke, their stripped-back sound weaving together fingerpicked guitars, layered harmonies, and songs that feel both deeply personal and slightly otherworldly.

City of the Sun may live in Brooklyn, New York, but their genre-defying music drifts like a tide across borders. They weave together a mosaic that pulls from a global array of sounds and cultures. Shades of indie rock, Latin folk, blues, and World Music carry the weight of their stories and memories, revealing entire landscapes. Formed by guitarist John Pita, joined by drummer Zach Para, the band later introduced bassists Matt Fasano and guitarist Marco Bolfelli. City of the Sun creates music that feels at once intimate and cinematic—like a film you can step inside. Since their debut in 2016 with To The Sun and All the Cities in Between, to their 2020 self-titled, and 2022’s Segunda Alma, the band has built a cult-following around the globe. As their profile rose, City of the Sun began touring alongside Peter Bjorn and John and Thievery Corporation, and their songs started to connect with fans on a profoundly universal level. Their lush and visceral compositions carry echoes of desert winds, city nights, Mediterranean summers, and the quiet glow of loss and transformation. It is no wonder that audiences from London to Paris to Athens, and beyond, have embraced them with sold-out rooms – crowds raised in reverence – listening as if each note were a lyric.&nbsp; Their new album, Under the Moon, marks a return and feels like stepping out of the shadows and into new sunlight. Produced with the legendary Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, Built to Spill), the record bends through moods and geographies: the rolling surf of “Angeles,” the spaghetti-western hush of “Bajo la Luna,” the desert rock pulse of “Ciudad del Sol,” the Mediterranean sway of “Hotel Alma.” Songs like “Un Disparo al Corazon” and “Twenty Twenty One” carry the weight of grief and separation, as the band ruminates on all that was lost during the Pandemic. Elsewhere, “Ella” and “Dream” shimmer with groove disco-funk energy, a new sound for the band, reminding us of joy breaking through.&nbsp; In “London,” memory becomes music—the raw ache of heartbreak folded into surf-rock currents and new wave hues, echoing the city where the band first discovered the power of their international reach. While with “Cinderella Man,” they use the boxer James J. Braddock’s story as an allegory for the musician’s struggle. The collaborative “Vuela” takes the record even further into new terrain. Created with Spanish singer-songwriter Gizmo Varillas, it draws on the legacy of Argentine folk legend Atahualpa Yupanqui, intertwining Latin and African rhythms with a timeless, throwback spirit. It’s a song that feels both rooted in tradition and lit with forward motion—an emblem of the band’s ability to honor the past while shaping something entirely their own. “The serendipity of this song is that we didn’t write it for vocals. It just happened – Gizmo created a beautiful melody,” explains Pita. Finally, there’s “Metamorphosis." The album closes like a final frame in an old Western—departure, horizon, the sense of leaving one world behind to enter another.What City of the Sun creates is more than instrumental music. It is a language of its own—one that listeners across continents understand instinctively. Their stories shine through in the rhythmic fire of Pita’s Ecuadorian roots, in the pulse of Para’s percussion, in the global sensibilities Marco and Matt bring to the band’s evolving sound. Under the Moon is both a reflection of their shared journey and a signifier for what’s to come.&nbsp;
