“Like being suckerpunched by a tidal wave, Scottish industrial/noise group Mrs Frighthouse bring utter devastation with new single DIY Exorcism. Raging against abusers and sounding like the end of the world cranked up to 10, the song brings to mind the maximalist terror of Lingua Ignota with some of the quirky energy of Julie Christmas, with added operatic elements that make it feel truly distinct.” - Rich Hobson, Metal Hammer: The 13 best new metal songs you need to hear this week (28/06/2024) Mrs Frighthouse are Carys and Luna Frighthouse, a wife and wife industrial noise metal duo from Glasgow. Their unique blend of harsh sonic dissonance and chaos combined with beautiful heart-wrenching vocals and extraordinary ranges have gained them a dedicated following and seen them share lineups with a diverse range of artists including Inter Arma, Wallowing, Cwfen, meth., Zetra, Jo Quail and Coltaine. “Industrial, claustrophobic and tense - sounds like the lovechild of The Body and Lingua Ignota raising hell in Freddy Krueger’s boiler room” - Matt Mills, Contributing editor at Metal Hammer and Freelance Journalist at The Guardian, The AV Club, The Independent and The Telegraph They have a diverse range of inspiration, from industrial metal to musical theatre – they’ve bee ncompared to Lingua Ignota, The Body, Throbbing Gristle, Ministry and “some of the slower more obscure early Slipknot songs”. Some of their main influences include GGGOLDDD, Brutus, Chelsea Wolfe, Nine Inch Nails, Edith Piaf, Chat Pile, Steven Sondheim, and The Paper Chase. They show unflinching levels of lyrical directness when writing about traumatic experiences and anger at injustices. They directly confront issues of misogyny, homophobia and transphobia in performances that feel in equal parts disturbing and cathartic. The band name ‘Mrs Frighthouse’ came about from the fact that they really are ‘Mrs and Mrs’. ‘Queerbaiting’ and the sexualisation of queer women for the male gaze have been rife for decades, while portraying genuine romance and commitment between two women unfortunately still remains subversive. The pair want to combat the invisibility and erasure queer women experience with their music they’ve termed ‘sapphic metal’. One of their notable achievements to date is being featured in Carrie Marshall’s Small Town Joy (published by 404 Ink in April 2025), where Luna was interviewed about the realities of being a queer musician in modern Scotland. Carrie Marshall is a trans writer, musician and broadcaster and her book Small Town Joy discusses the history and influence of queer musicians in the Scottish scene. “By incorporating a gothic aesthetic into their work, Mrs Frighthouse’s terrifying work serves as an authentic portrayal of life under the male-gaze and how women are still viewed as a commodity in an age of industrialised misogyny. This is what makes the duo so terrifying; they are a genuine mirroring of the horror half of humanity have to face on a daily basis” - Dan Hillier, Noizze: Ones To Watch: The Top 20 Artists Set To Conquer 2025 (16/01/2025) The duo unleashed their debut album, mastered by the legendary James Plotkin and released on vinyl by Lay Bare Recordings, in September 2025. This release was accompanied by a run of shows around the UK that saw them bring their masterful live performance to new audiences. Both the album and live shows were met with critical acclaim. Pushing the boundaries of their unique sound against the backdrop of world growing bleaker by the day, Mrs Frighthouse are continuing to pave the way for queer women, cis and trans alike, in heavy music.
